As I'm reading through his works they are far darker than I was expecting. . .My fav of his novels is The Caretaker, and I think the next would be this collection of stories. The darker ones are well-written, well-told, but my pref is for a more hopeful world than the one Serena or The Risen deliver. . .what's your fav of his oeuvre?
Serena was the one I couldn't put down. I saw him speak at a luncheon a few years ago and he was pretty funny there, with a very dry wit. He said Serena took a lot out of him while he was writing it.

Serena herself was a piece of work, wicked evil.
