After navigating a little pile of Dostoevsky over the past years, this is my first Tolstoy read. I find him slightly more lighthearted (perhaps droll is the word) as far as Russian novels go. Since this is a long book, I am glad of it.

If Tolkien read War and Peace, Platon Karataev had to have been a seed for Tom Bombadil.
The way Karataev pulls Pierre from his mental grave of horror after witnessing the shootings, simply by being his inexplicable, jolly self, singing and loving all the world - there's so much similarity to the barrows and Tom Bombadil, but also so much difference as to be no copying, but simply genius lighting genius
