Wait wut? 23 years just passed? That was a hell of a chapter break (and a bit of an unremarked upon heartbreak). Maybe I've been reading too many romance novels (if there's such a thing as too much of a good thing), but my favorite story element seems to have atrophied, withered and blown away like the blossoms of an apple tree in a spring storm.

Enjoying so far. Reminds me of Neal Stephenson's Baroque trilogy, a bit, and other fantasy/alternative histories I've enjoyed, stretching back to the Illuminatus trilogy, The Name of the Rose, and, as others have noted, The DaVinci Code. Lovely prose.
