I can infer that Matilda's mom Ms.Cook will make it back alive. Even though the survival rate from yellow fever is very slim I still believe that she will return. I don't believe that only Matilda + Eliza could run the shop alone. In the text it says"I need all the help I can get because I don't think we can do this by ourselves"(pg.227). I'm conclusion the only way that this works out is if the mother returns.

One of Matilda's best internal trait is her kindness. Matilda is always trying to do what is right and not trying to be cruel. For example when Mother Smith told Matilda to bring Nell to the orphan house she didn't want to because she needed to protect her. " That would be cruel, she needs time to develop and get over her mother". This shows that Matilda is willing to do anything to help someone in need

Matilda is very hardworking.Whenever her mother needs help in the coffee shop she is always there putting in 100% of her effort. When Matilda and her Grandfather were stranded 10 miles outside of the city Matilda walked at least 1 mile to find water + food. In the text it says "I walked a few 100 feet and there were many trees. Eventually I found water".(pg.85) This shows how willing she is to help people around her.

I this book the story is told in the first person point of view by the main character Matilda. The setting takes place in Philadelphia during the post-Revolutionary War years. The setting affects the story because of the disease that went around the coast of Philadelphia. Since there was this disease many people moved up north to get away from the deathly fever.
