The only thing I don’t love about this book (and it’s more a reflection of society) is that Shihara - who beyond being a topic of conversation for her - literally serves as dead weight in Kiko’s life.
Him being in her life is logically more inconvenience than value, but socially as he is a man who allows her loved ones to relate to her, and is the only reason she’s welcomed into the realm of ‘normal’.
Infuriating.

My very cells exist for the convenience store.
Just wild.
The fact that she spoke of 'human me' versus 'animal me'.
At least she has a great sense of purpose.

She was like that man who was shouting at customers earlier in the book!

Shiraha's sister in law arrives.
'I want you to hide me' makes a LOT more sense now.
...'That's the image of you that pleases them most, isn't it wonderful?'
...'You're so lucky you met me' UGHHHHHHH

Shifts from professional to personal conversations. People being in her business.
All because of a (useless) man she’s been kind enough to let share her space.
Art mirroring society too well for comfort.

People who are normal enjoy putting those who aren’t on trial.

‘Oh sorry, it’s the first time I’ve kept an animal at home so it feels like having a pet you see’.
I was about to retract the comment I made before because Shihara’s the definition of toxic masculinity. He deserved Kiko saying this.

Shiraha is giving incel culture mixed with a splash of narcissism. It’s actually for the best that Kiko is who literally saves him from whatever future he otherwise would have met; she is aware of but not insecure/ emotional about how others perceive her and can discern the subjective from the objective.

'You've changed somehow... didn't you used to speak more normally?'
[...]
'But Yukari was right' I thought 'after all, I absorb the world around me and that's changing all the time'.
Just like water (analogy about new replacing old), the things that make me up have changed too.

'But they didn't want to think it through that far and I had the feeling I was being told they wanted to settle the matter this way because it was the easiest option for them'.
It so nice to read this because it's evidence that I'm not the only person who regularly considers this.

Straight off the bat: neurodivergence.
Classic examples of masking.
Interesting interactions that reflect society's views overall, acting how a herder would to sheep.
