Daniel Shindler An essential book in order to understand the New York City metropolitan area.

Julio Pino Moses was builder and destroyer, an autocrat who built New York city at the expense of the poor. Los Angeles has a Mulholland Drive, for the engineer who brought water to the city. Who honors Moses today?

message 3: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Shindler I do not think he was ever a figure of veneration in NY

Julio Pino True, Daniel, but La Guardia managed to prevent FDR from firing him, and Stephen Benet calls him the builder of New York in his classic short story "By The Rivers of Babylon".

Daniel Shindler Yes, it is sad…but for better or worse he shaped the configuration of NY metropolitan area. I still shudder every time I drive through the middle of Van Cortlandt park on the Major Deegan.( Generally there is no better in for better or worse when it comes to Moses.
