After witnessing disturbing events during the white phase of military training, and before entering the blue phase, Ryan was able to visit his family for two weeks. Once back in the military, he and some of his squad started going from place to place to create better transport and fortify bases in Iraq. One of his allies had died from an IED. At the end of the book, he was able to return home and enter college.
