Really? A guy who was born probably around 1915 and died in 1939 is a great-uncle of someone living in 2024? My math is glitching.
Though that's just a small detail in all the things that genuinely don't make sense, making the plot seem like a swiss cheese 🧀

Teddy was 25 years old in May, 1939. Teddy also celebrated his 28th birthday in October, 1939.
You know, I'm just kind of skimming by now, and I'm still catching these things. The author could have, too, I'm sure, if he bothered to proofread his own book 🙈

Valen I saw a couple reels from the author on insta promoting this so I was intrigued! Really looking forward to hearing your thoughts when you’re done 🫶🏼

Alexandra Numbers aren’t my forte, but I'm sure there's something wrong with all of this...Good luck with this book, Teru!

Linn oh no :( I was ready to give Ben another chance (the one I've read from him was also a pass from me) but it seems like someone didn't improve their writing much

message 4: by angry axolotl (new)

angry axolotl Nope, no maths for me today- but that doesn't sound good! D: I'm gonna have to make you answer some of my questions should you ever make it through this book xD So good luck with that, I guess...?

message 5: by Linn (new) - added it

Linn Although as a side note I think the math should be ok? My great grandma was born 1916 and I‘m alive so 🧐

message 6: by Ella (new) - added it

Ella Looks interesting but a book that's a mix of Hill House and the Notebook makes me giggle...hopefully it's good though! ☆☆

len ❀ i wish i didn’t pay attention to issues like these but sometimes they can’t be avoided 😭

Oh me too, and the promo looks absolutely amazing! 😳 Though I'm not sure so far how much I'll like this, I'm afraid... Thank you! ❤️

Thank you, Alexandra ❤️ Yeah I'm pretty sure there's a generation missing, though it really is just a minor mistake in the haystack

This is my first book by this author, and I can imagine it could work if it were edited at least a bit :( I'm not a happy camper right now, but maybe I'm just generally sliding into a slump and the book is the victim 😭
The great-uncle thing, I think such a person should be the same generation as a grandparent, not a great-grandparent, so it still doesn't make sense in my head. Maybe in the final version, there will be a great-great-uncle lol 😅

Cody I mayhaps DNF'd this one quite early in (so wanted to love it)

Ahaha you know what? That's the incentive I needed to actually finish this book xD So thank you, and you can interrogate me anytime ❤️
(also helloooo you amazing Japanese speaker ❤️ still can't get over it!)

Oooh you're right, I didn't even pay attention to the comps xD The jury is still out on it being interesting, I'm afraid, but thank you! ❤️

Fr I HATE when my brain does this, I saw a few mistakes and nonsensically written scenes in the beginning, and since then, I'm hyperfixated on anything that doesn't really make sense 😭😭

Oh no 😢 but also fair enough because I'm struggling quite a lot. It's such a shame though, the premise and the cover are delicious

Fingers crossed the finished copy will be nothing like this (it's quite clear it didn't see a proper editor, that's my main beef with the ARC) so you can actually enjoy it! ❤️

message 18: by Ray (new)

Ray Eh. I dont know the context to prove the math or not. But I'm 23 with a grandpa born in 1938. But hes one of the youngest of 8 kids so while they're dead i did have great uncles/aunts born in like the late 1910s to mid 1920s. Everything I've seen about this in early reviews has said there's alot of mistakes that should've been caught in the editting before it made it to arc readers so im starting to think this ones not gonna be for me.

Woah okay, so definitely not impossible! Thank you for letting me know. I'm afraid then that I'm starting to seriously nitpick with this book, yikes...
The rest really seems like it actually wasn't edited at all, so I'm not surprised other readers complained about it. Though that still will have been rectified in the finished, published copy, right, so there's still hope...🙈

yeah, I remember saying the same thing in my review of Lord of Eternal Night from Ben Alderson. It needed at least 1-2 more rounds of editing (and that was the finished copy!) Kinda feel like he has a lot of yes-people around him, that do not give him the critique he needs in the early stages of writing. It's sad because I love the premise of each of his books.

and OH i totally thought a great uncle was in the same generation as a great grandparent lmao. I think it would still be possible, albeit they'd probably be pushing 90? (math is not my thing either, so actually ignore me on this haha)

Ooh. Well now, that makes a sad kind of sense. Which is such a shame because the author obviously has some great ideas, but the execution is a bit lacking and the editors should help with that? That's doing him such a disservice 🙈

Yeah, Ray actually confirmed it IS possible ❤️ I'm kinda glad I can scratch that from the list of "what the hell" my brain is unfortunately creating 🙈

message 22: by angry axolotl (new)

angry axolotl No no no, now I'm the one making you suffer?? (see, no italics!)
I'll have to come up with some very creative questions to interrogate you with then xD
(Seems like it pays off sometimes! xD I probably won't be getting over it for a while either, still feels a bit unreal.)
