The crew that was still alive got rescued and was taken back to Nantucket. All of the survivors ended up going on more whaling voyages. Pollard, the Captain of the Essex, ran out of luck and sank two more ships. Chase the Right Hand became a captain and went on multiple full cargo voyages. Both ended up retiring. Chase went crazy and died years later. Pollard became a night watchman and lived a little longer.

I like the book, but I wish that the author had not put in so many quotations of what was exactly said or what was pulled out of a personal journal. For example, the story would be going on, and a character would say something, and the author would put in what the person said or wrote in their journal in quotations. I do like when he does that for words that they said in "Nantucketer" and he translated it.
