I’ve only just started and there was one thing that bothered me.
“Peter never crowed or condescended, he was judt guilelessly better than…”
And then 2 pages later
“This was just like Peter. Condescending, even when ostensibly just asking for clarification.”
I’m still excited to read on, but this is a bit silly.

Okay one idea. Maybe it’s another fallible narrator thing, like in Yellowface, telling us the main character is going to change her mind all the time. But Yellowface was written in the 1st person perspective, this one is in 3rd. Are we listening in on Alice’s thoughts when the narrator is speaking?
