that is because they are somehow expecting Helen to be (as indeed she is in Homer and elsewhere) a beautiful object. In sappho's account, she is a subject, not an object. She happens to be beautiful, to be sure, but she is an active subject in pursuit of what she desires, what she regards as the most beautiful thing on the earth.

Based on her (Aphrodite's)characterization in Iliad, she is not the goddess you would pick to be your comrade in arms. It may be that what Sappho is doing in this song deliberately rejecting the old Homeric values. In effect she is here announcing a different kind of battle and a different kind of Aphrodite. one that perhaps reflects aspects of the goddess's original status as a powerful earth mother deity.
