the last 20% of the book is half decent and at least twice as factual as the rest. unfortunately, the fixation with eastern european jewish immigrants continued apace as he somehow managed to emphasize the jewish population over even the italians when discussing the mob involvement with the garment industry, even referencing them while discussing the italian mobsters themselves.
disappointing but unsurprising

just read Triangle instead. this dude needs to work on his antisemitism before writing any more books. this reads like a mid rate true crime novel with racist implications.

okay. this goddamn author just made a holocaust pun about the jewish owners and victims of the fire. forcing myself to finish this solely so i can rate it one star in good conscience

red flag 4: without fail, every time he brings up greed and exploitation, he implies that the owner of the shop is jewish, and only makes such critiques of jewish owned shops, again, despite them being the minority.

i'm already picking up an uncomfortable undertone of antisemitic rhetoric from this guy. nothing overt... things like:
-defining antisemitism as exclusively religious hate (rather than a form of racism) and refusing to call russian ghettoes "ghettos"
-fixating on the MINORITY of jewish sweatshop owners and when ref exploitative practices, emphasizing money-hungriness and "working the system", unlike irish or italians
