The main characters are Citra and Rowan. Currently, humans have conquered death. There are no diseases and people can live for 1,000 years. So the world developed an organization called the Scythedom with its members being called scythes. Every year they need to glean (kill) a certain amount of humans so the population doesn't go up. If the population goes up everyone will suffer and starve.
