i could write essays on richard's guilt. the crime and punishment reference + the way it weighs so heavily on his conscience when he was only passively involved in bunny's murder. 'fear for our own lives might have induced us to lead him to the gallows' when he had no connection to the farmer's death whatsoever. he imagined himself as having a more significant role than he did, and it ruined him

just remembered the music video for the original version of hurricane laughter by fontaines dc. grian chatten looks almost exactly how i picture richard in that video and it is almost eerie

id forgotten how intense the final hundred pages of this is. if i were feeling less wretched right now, i would be writing something poignant about how it is a perfect metaphor for how rapidly a well-crafted illusion can crumble. or some idle comment about charles sleeping in a giant plastic snail to feel less depressed (it did not work). or even the comparison of camilla to persephone. it is all so good
