In this and book 1, there were multiple bad guys, ye? But in the first, you only got Paton's POV, and I liked him. In this, you get Chris Kidd, and I can be sympathetic to his story, though idc much about him. At least at this point we can be pretty sure he didn't actually kill anyone--someone else set the tenement fire & he's the fall guy. But we're also getting Chisholm's POV, and he's just shit through and through

I'm still so confused when they talk about the fire from the beginning of the book.. they always say four victims, four were killed. I could swear we were told there were only three people in the building. Mom and daughter, old man downstairs. I must have completely missed something. That, or it's a last minute reveal situation.

Really! Figures Nicol's background involves a lost pregnancy. Women aren't allowed any other kind of backstory, after all. Ugh. Seriously. Did that add anything of real value to her character? She was developing just fine up to this point.

So uhh.. why has McCormack just gone and smashed up a bar? I mean, I'm sure it's another mob place, but seems a little over the top (not to mention dangerous) if they're just looking to question people

Hold up, Shand has a gun from one of Maitland's guys? When did this happen? We knew he was in league with Haddow, but not that he was talking with Maitland's guy? Did I miss that?

Little disappointed Paton isn't featuring again, but curious about this ex lover.. I assume that's the guy who called crying. Iain Shand is a bit of a dickhead, but I'm sure he'll learn his lesson(s). Actually, so far I'd sooner say Nicol and Shand are the main characters rather than McCormack.. I hope the focus shifts back to him. I want to know more about his personal life/thoughts/feelings too, not just the case.

Like yeah, sucks that the mom and girl died, but none of his POV sections have made me feel for him at all. Sure he was set off by the fire, but he's blown all the sympathy I would have had for him by resorting to torture, bombing a place with innocent people inside, and now kidnapping and borderline torturing a child with intent to kill him?? Fuck you, man.
