I really wish I knew if Tolstoy thought the great men of history are truly great or just a figurehead for circumstances often beyond their control. I’m so far in this book and I really wish I knew that. I wonder if Tolstoy will tell me at some point.

I did this on a chapter a day over a year thing. I don't like Russian literature for all the reasons this book was frustrating. I get it. It's a good story and I feel like I understand that period of Russian history a bit better. Good luck.

I liked Anna Karenina a lot but this is very different! I think Tolstoy said he didn’t even consider War and Peace a novel. I’m reading it with a couple other friends and our goal is 6 months.
