Giving the audiobook a try, it sort of helps with the stilted dialogue but it still doesn't feel right. This might be a case where the movie fixed the not very good book.

Chris has the worst inner monologue, I haven't run into a character that's felt so Written By An Author in ages. Feels so stilted; I've enjoyed better fanfiction, oops.
