Although Medievals saw the world as symbol, this did not mean that all of their art was necessarily symbol rather than just pure delight in the created world, and an effort to bring all of creation into parishes.

Fun read. “The Middle Ages were unanimous in their reply—the world is a symbol…The word therefore may be defined as “a thought of God realised through the Word.” If this be so then in each being is hidden a divine thought; the world is a book written by the hand of God in which every creature is a world charged with meaning.”
