one of my tuition students is in year nine, and im planning on assigning 'homework' that is just to try and read a chapter or two of a book each day. does anyone have suggestions for books i could recommend that are suitable for thirteen/fourteen year olds? i dont know what's popular amongst young people at the moment and have very few books i can recommend to someone that age in good conscience

magdabuena as someone who is fairly regularly in the library with year 7s-10s, they very much seem to be into the 2010s YA. got asked about a kiera cass book the other day so i think that’s very much still going strong. one of my mom’s friend’s kids who’s 13 says the best book he’s ever read is charlie higson’s the enemy. i remember studying and enjoying the hunger games at that age too. the giver is good if you want a short one. the powerless series is good for romantasy with nothing worse than kissing (but i have not read the last book so i could be wrong about that). nevermoor is FANTASTICCC too, but maybeee a little young. murder most unladylike and the rest of them are very good, same with the sinclair mysteries. hope this was of help!!

✨ tweety ✨ well, what magda said plus I would add Rohal Dahl with matilda, jerry spinelli, the goosebumps series, bridge to terabithia. I would even dare to suggest the City of ghosts series by ve schawb because the protagonist is 12-13 and the book is middle grade (I read it so I am sure it's okay)

✨ tweety ✨ if you want to suggest classic lit then some short stories by wilde like the canterville ghost, a christmas carol and the old curiosity shop by dickens, a little princess / the secret garden by hodgson burnett... wait I could go on lol

katie meddins (maresh) ave been trying to think of things i’ve read that i’d be comfortable recommending to someone this age and all i’ve managed to come up with is the City of Ghosts trilogy by V (spooky but not scary, and quite wholesome) and also the Skyward series by Sanderson (these are technically YA but not really young YA. there is some violence in the sense of like spaceships with laser guns etc but nothing graphic that i recall, the romance aspect is very minor and incredibly pg. also has magical space slugs and who doesn’t love that)
