The narrator, Stefanija Tschornenko, is an orphaned Ukrainian maid in the household of Dr. Anger, whose grandfather immigrated to Western Ukraine, when it belong to the Austrian monarchy. She is the friend and servant of Adelja, Dr. Anger's only child, who lost her mother in the same fire that killed Stefa's parents. The two women form a triangle with Adelja's husband Petro, a stonemaison.

The Ukrainian city Ivano-Frankivsk belonged to Poland before WWII with a different name - or rather several: Stanisławów (polnisch), Станиславів (Ukrainian), Stanislau (German) and סטאַניסלאַוו (Yiddish). This is the setting of this novel.
