Ch 2
"Jesus founded the city of God among the cities of men to witness to and transform those cities." The word for city is "polis" which means what the church (the city of God) does in this world is inherently "poli"-tical.

The first chapter sets out the core idea of the book. The New Jerusalem John sees descending from heaven at the end of Revelation is the Church in this age. It is visible, it is a part of the future breaking into the present through the power of resurrection, and it is on a mission to bring about that blessed future.

United to Him by the Spirit, we are the hands and feet of Jesus in the world. What we do, corporately and individually, Jesus does in and through us. This is what it means to be "in Christ" and Christ in us. It is only when our deeds are done in Him that we can be worthy to hear, "Well done, good and faithful servant!" The Father speaks His approval of His Son over us.

The church's mission and message, then, is the announcement of the Kingdom of God. Jesus Christ has conquered sin, the devil, and death and has been declared King of kings and Lord of lords by his resurrection from the dead. He is ruler of the kings of this earth. All owe Him their undivided allegiance.
