John and Bertha are the same in that they are marrying people they don’t actually know. But deluding themselves into thinking otherwise. THE REAL HORROR IN THIS STORY

Contrast between horror of the past and wedding of the present creates a nice foreboding feeling

I think this book is a lot of telling and not showing. From the construct of using Bertha’s diaries to literally tell what happened… to Bertha and John’s relationship (they’re suddenly in love with one another? What? Do they even really know each other? No). I just don’t care for the execution at all.

“With that, he kissed me very hard on the mouth. So hard that the inner flesh of my lips was cut against my teeth, drawing a trickle of blood.” Realizing it’s only giving a dulled sense of horror because if you’ve read Jane Eyre, you can vaguely predict what’s going to happen which reduces the fear as you read, it becomes more of a question of HOW rather than IF. Would it were sharper in feeling.
