“[Cpt. Smith] could not believe that the light […] he had the lifeboats rowing toward, despite morsing and the rockets overhead, had not responded.”

“Gibson stared through the lenses and [Titanic] appeared to be listing. […] ‘A ship is not going to fire rockets for nothing. […] There must be something wrong.’”

i’m not sure if that was the intended effect by the author but i’ve found the mental image of his correction abt captain smith going down with titanic inexplicably hilarious:

‘[…] in fact, what is notable is Captain Smith not saying much of anything at all and then disappearing.’

sforzinda the book quotes lightoller, about how he wished he had a larger gun so he could wake the californian up with a couple of shells, and now i fully believe he would’ve swam across to murder captain lord with it

sforzinda (re-)reading abt an event that you already know A Lot Of Things about means you get to reimagine the tone of the text however you want to (free of the fear of misinterpretation), and for this round i’ve chosen slapstick comedy
