it's got all the makings of morante's work that i love...her lush prose, her complex characterizations, isolating childhoods, the ironies of the patriarchy...but there's something else missing. i'm not sure what it is. arturo doesn't have elisa's or even nino's charm for me to like him, but maybe it's just bc it's very early into the book?
