Finished The Black Stone this morning. Often regarded as one of Howard’s greatest stories, and I can see why it gets such high praise. Unsettling and brutal in places, and written which great prose. I wanted to read it before the end of October, and I’m glad I’ve managed to do that.

Children of the Night - the first John O’Donnell story I’ve read by Howard. An individual who can look back to his Pictish lineage and relive events. A good concept, though the story itself didn’t full stick for me this time. Glad to have appearances of Conrad and Kirowan, characters that I look forward to reading more in the future. Next up, The Black Stone - very excited for this one!

A return to Robert E. Howard’s horror stories with Dig Me No Grave. This is the first story I’ve read from him that’s set within the same shared universe as H. P. Lovecraft’s mythos. Really enjoyed this one - the atmosphere was strong throughout, and it included some genuinely chilling scenes!

Just finished the story The Hills of the Dead, which was a Solomon Kane story. Including vampires in an African forest, voodoo and the exploration of a dead city. What’s not to like?

Now finished Shadow of the Beast - again, a good read, nothing outstanding but well worth a read.

Just finished the story Restless Waters. Not much going on in this one, but written well with good dialogue. Nice to read a pirate story set out at sea though.

The next story was Out of the Deep - A Tale of Faring Town. Probably the first true ‘Lovecraftian’ inspired horror story here from REH that I’ve read so far. Another enjoyable story - all of which have felt different to the ones I’ve read so far.

Pages 71-80 covered the two stories ‘Casonetto’s Last Song’ and ‘The Touch of Death’. The latter being my favourite and probably one of the best of the collection so far. A dive into the age old horror, the dark. The earlier story was okay but nothing special for me.

Just finished the story ‘The Spirit of Tom Molyneaux’ - essentially a ghost story centred around a boxing match. Whilst I wouldn’t call it a horror story, I guess it’s most suitable in this collection. It’s not a typical ‘haunting’ ghost story, but more so that a spirit comes to the aid of one of the characters. Happy to have read it, as it’s different to what I would usually read.
