I was briefly stuck at the middle of the book. There was one very long chapter that I saw as too intimidating. When I finally got to it, the chapter proved to be a very quick read. I wonder if I can finish this book before the end of the year.

On to the last of the 5 major sections. We have reached the part where the revolution is setting up barricades and battles are taking place.

Finished another section, titled Cosette. While advancing the story of Jean Valjean and Cosette, Victor Hugo takes time out to describe the battle of Waterloo, and to explain why his defeat had a silver lining - as prolog to liberty in the French revolution. He then described the horrid daily life of the convent nuns. and has Jean Valjean compare and contrast the lives of those nuns and the life of convicts.

I finished the first section, "Fantine." That's the equivalent of one typical contemporary novel. I remember a lot, and I am still enjoying it.

It is nice to sit down again with Monsieur Hugo and have him tell about people he has known, places he has been, and events he has seen. I will not be hurrying though it this time.
