After reading through chapter 2 of the book. One thought now resonates with me which Sherlock evoked : "A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has a difficulty in laying his hands upon it."

The first half of the book didn't seem that interesting to me - maybe because the ways of Holmes don't impress in the 21st century or I've outgrown my childhood. But the second half of the book and the tale about the Mormons and the ardous journey from Illinois to Utah seemed very pleasant - might be because of the historical fiction - and even the character of Jefferson Hope the killer and his motives seem clearer.

I was getting a little bored of the murder mystery - since all in all it looked like a basic murder case. But what evoked some thought as to the possibility of something being awry was that Gregson had caught Arthur from the lodging - but Sherlock had predicted it to be a poisoning case - unlike what Gregson had put forward as a blow to the stomach.

What I've ended up learning was that Arthur Conan Doyle wasn't just a secluded writer, he was an avid sportsman - playing football, cricket and even golf - he even played for the MCC - a staggering 10 first class matches!
Tried his part in politics - didn't win though - even helped acquit two innocent men from their sentence. About spiritualism I would hold my criticism of him.
Introduction of watson, Holmes is good
