‘The atrophy of older traditions of self-help has eroded everyday competence, in one area after another, and has made the individual dependent on the state, the corporation, and other bureaucracies’ (18-9), such that ‘men and women no longer manage even to raise their children well without the help of certified experts’, in one example.

Lasch is a populist. Though his argument is far more complex, post WWII capitalism = bad. Corporate capitalism’s elites have subverted reality and bear direct responsibility for the therapeutic culture of the present day.

Jehian Tiley Interesting. Does he give examples?

ThePrill He argues that the concept of 'community' has been lost in the modern day, and that the modern man has to outsource his productivity. Rather than asking the community for assistance, in the case of parenting, or 'figuring it out', he outsources. This outsourcing serves, not to assist him, but to validate what he is already doing or so that he can attach his own practice to the names of prominent people in the field he outsources to.

Jehian Tiley Ahhhh yes. I have seen this very phenomenon quite regularly. Surely I have been guilty of this myself although my bullheadedness is a good antidote to this.
