This discussion of Mosthari Hilal's book Hässlichkeit reminds me both that I need to finally read that, it's been languishing on my shelf for far too long, and also that I always thought the German word for ugly (hässlich) sounds much meaner than in English, both phonetically and through its proximity to Hass (=hatred)
