I think the reason why Vanessa irritated me was because I too once believed that a man who loved me couldn't have done what he did. Its hard to accept that you were groomed, lied to, manipulated and used. Harder in this case because vanessa was only 14 when it started, and until the very end when Strane died he tortured her till the very end. She is a victim. This novel was thought provoking, and emotional above all.

As I get closer and closer to the end, I cant help but feel sorry for vanessa and almost annoyed? She admits in her own mind and even in instances when alone with Strane that he did abuse her, & what she went through as a child was traumatic. She knows this and acknowledges it throughout her adolescence- even in her late adulthood. Her refusal to fully accept this is a direct & deeply rooted result of what happened.
