the "plot" consists of the same 3 scenes repeated over and over and over again. coal gets mad at his dad, he thinks about what a loser he is, he has weirdly exaggerated tension with hex, he gets mad at his dad again, thinks about what a loser he is... and i fear we're gonna be stuck in this perpetual loop until the end of the book

this book is soooo boring. 2h in and we're still in the middle of a lengthy info dump about the hierarchies and power structures of this universe. a silly little romcom does NOT require this epic fantasy level of extensive worldbuilding. not a single thing has happened so far aside from pages upon pages of self-loathing word vomit from our protagonist.
