I can see why these tales have been adapted and retold so much over the years. They’re simple but evoke the superstition that I think anyone who is immersed in nature eventually feels. Reading these stories was a touch tedious just because of how they were written. The descriptions were thorough and a little dense at time but they created such a beautiful picture of fall that it made me nostalgic. 5/10

My brain has to switch gears to read some of this and sometimes the descriptions of the countryside are just a bit too much for my attention span. However, this is such a cozy read that feels PERFECT for autumn (and especially perfect for spooky season). I feel like I should have a cup of cider while reading.

I’ve read version of Rip Van Winkle that were edited for children so I was expecting some variation. What I wasn’t expecting was the mentions of the Revolutionary war. Because I’d only ever read abridged versions it never even crossed my mind that the story took place in America or that Rip would be so confounded coming back to a home no longer subject to British rule. It was an interesting little moment.
