Sicarus is probably the most interesting villain the High Republic has had for a while, especially his position as the 'pack-master' of the Nameless. Hopefully, the book keeps him as its main antagonist and doesn't try to bring in other villains from other books

The Easter Egg of the Jedi shield was amazing, a perfect use of an Easter Egg because THR fans will recognise it while others won't have to know anything about Cohmac giving Reath the shield beyond a personal moment between these two estranged friends

Cohmac's realisation that he needed to confront his past to help them out, no matter whether he was ready or, only to be hunted by the Nameless pack immediately afterwards, was an excellent character moment. It's been a long time since I've been on the edge of my seat listening to a chase scene for a book. Bravo, George Mann

This novel could have been read on its own. The Blight alone is an interesting challenge, although it is still connected to the Nameless threat. Mann does have the unfortunate habit of frequently opening in media res, then handholding the reader though how the characters got to that point. I'm not sure I like the flashbacks either. Cohmac's storyline in the present is far more interesting

So far, this book checks all the boxes in a good way: the threat of the Blight is clear from the very start and everything about the book seems geared towards figuring that out. A very good start and I'm cautiously optimistic to see if it can deliver on the High Republic's promises. So far, so good (+ any books with the Vessel and its crew are fine by me)
