I realized that I devote the most attention to Flannery by tracing her serendipitous appearances. Due to my sudden rapidly growing obsession with Springsteen (I am dressed like him for Halloween as I write this), I have been inevitably led back to her. I started with “A Good Man is Hard to Find” because of an excerpt of Zane’s book about the making of Nebraska, arguably one of the best albums of all time.

I was reading the stories “in order” for a month, but then put it down, as I realized this is a systematically limiting way to approach a book of short stories. I had been able to do this with Carver, Kafka, Chekhov, etc. but never Baldwin or Walker. Or O’Connor. They/she feel(s) different to me. Like a ghost of mine that I refuse to pay attention to. I want to give her attention (in the Weilian sense).

I hate how both of these updates start with affirmations of realization, as if that is not how all thoughts are born(?), but nonetheless I keep realizing. I am also adding that I watched my tape of Badlands this morning which undoubtedly thrusted me back into the arms of Flannery again. I don’t think she’d embrace me, but I think I’d feel sufficiently acknowledged with a stoic gaze.
