I’ve finished the last chapter, the end was rather anticlimactic actually. He died before seeing Paru, yet another promise he couldn’t keep. And she couldn’t see him either. I felt he was truly unravelling, but I don’t wholly sympathise with him either.
Before I post my review, I’ll be freshly watching the SLB film adaptation of Devdas to see how greatly they differ. The tones are entirely distinct!

Chandramukhi and Devdas have another meeting. I am surprised she left her simple life to go back to what she did. But she wanted to meet Devdas that terribly. His behaviour, I have a split mind about it. Whilst it feels he is being selfish and taking what he can, I think also he’s giving her the wish she wanted, one goodness amongst all the sin he has accumulated in his grief. One chapter left, his end is near..

The story is coming to its tragedy. Even after so long, Paru still holds Devdas in her heart. And he’s becoming undone in his realisation of all he’s lost. Monoroma’s letter mentions how death seems to be upon him, so I believe his drinking habits will lead to his demise. Does he really just blow that much money on wine? It is astounding! I loved Chandramukhi’s speech too. It was absolutely moving and true!

Okay I’m starting to understand the appeal of the story. Devdas’s love is late and now he has to suffer the consequences. Whilst I don’t sympathise with what he did beforehand, I do truly think he held feelings for Paru but something got in front of him. He notices his wrong but that’s not enough. He can’t just confess his mistake and think that will be able to turn back time..

Paru is settling well into her new family, however Devdas is spiralling. I was surprised to see Chandramukhi fell in love with him so quickly, but I think the notion that he came and paid her without taking her dignity moved her. He didn’t talk to her lowly like most men would have. But he doesn’t want her love because he sees himself wrong for it. It’s clear he’s grieving his mistake, but is this truly it?

Okay…Wow Devdas has issues. I really can’t understand how his mind works. He rejected Paru and now that he’s regretting it, he lashes out at her? He thinks power will give him what he wants. Yet if that’s his philosophy, why does he become so lame to fate? You’d think he’d fight it more if he was so devil willed. But he just throws tantrums and sulks, unable to make sense of his emotions or grief.

Paru knows her emotions but Devdas seems to go where the wind sways. He seems to not have footing of his own despite how unrestrained he was in his youth. It makes me wonder, is the way he is the effect of being in Kolkata and his studies or is he just a cowardly person? Is his bravado an act or was it an attempt?
The chapter ends giving some insight on Devdas’s character, but why is he so complicit in his own ruin

The book is definitely different to what i imagined. I get the vibe between Devdas and Paru given they’re children and he seems pretty temperamental and care free but i wonder how the love story roots from this and why Paru loves him the way she does.
