Twain’s work is just superior in every way to Everret’s rip off. Twain does a masterful job of showing the two hustlers practicing their craft before they swindle the small town and Twain’s reproduction of Hamlet’s soliloquy in the Southern vernacular is incredibly impressive.

Everett really owes the world of literature an apology.

And on the flip side Jim isn’t considered dumb for not seeing through the flimflam men but it’s seen as his understandable concern for the family he has fled. This seems so much more realistic than the James version constantly obsessed with Western Philosophers.

The Twain and Everett reveal their protagonist see through the flimflam men is quite revealing. Huck is much more subtle. To his mind these men are a shade more timid than actual royals so they’re better off to not even mention it. Here we see a powerful critique of royalty.

Twain does such an amazing job painting the picture of this small town from its cowardly violence to its parochial tastes in theatre. Unlike Everett who barely paints a picture at all, Twain presents a rich tapestry of a people and their culture along with local idioms.

Twain’s dialogue is far superior to anything found in James. It’s not only more rhythmic it also feels more natural. It’s also interesting how much more subtle Twain is at letting us know Huck has figured out the hucksters.

Having Huck apologize to Jim is such a beautifully poignant moment in the book.
