Volkheimer (Werner’s war friend) now 51 years old, receives his Werner’s belongings in the mail, the US army prisoner of war processing camp is returning the items of dead German soldiers

Warner finds Marie-Laure, kills the German in her house. Marie- Laure sets the gem free enclosed in the miniature house her father built. Warner walks Marie-Laure to safety where she is reunited with her uncle.
Warner goes and retrieves the gem from the ocean, he is then picked up and sent to an infermary, unable to eat and sick he stumbles into a field where he dies from a land mine set out by his own army.
