Personally, I am unable to imagine fighting German U-Boats in the North Atlantic in gales so severe that, on watch, the salt spray hits you as chunks of solid ice.

Later in the book, to a greater degree, yes, but still very hard for me to feel the immense pain, fear and exhaustion experienced by the doomed characters. I guess you had to have been there, lol.
