Love God most, over any other thing
And yourself, without overreaching,
And your friend, through nature’s teaching,
And your foe, vengeance rejecting.

I’m reading the whole Envy chapter through an Heir of Redclyffe lens because that is the best novel portrayal of envy I’ve ever read.

Such a good chapter on pride and humility. She has lots of good quotes and descriptions about humility but I especially love the idea that humility grounds us in being creatures. We are created beings and everything about us depends on greater goodness, on air we breathe, food we eat, family we’re given, and the Creator who brings into being all these things.

Have been chomping at the bit to start this one!! Why?? Because in the preface is this line: “Medieval people liked to compare the soul to a garden. Christ was the gardener who kept it…”
