Ekman describes how he conducted his research overcoming the language barrier by asking the participants of New Guinea to construct a story about photographs depicting facial expressions, and how those people were given a situation and asked to act out their expression in such a case. Result was that some emotions were universal, discrepancies arise when societal demands are imposed to hide them.
