Whatever else one thinks of him, one can't help but be impressed by Kautsky's combined depth of historical, Marxological and comparative political knowledge, as well as the erudition with which he outlines his arguments. The latter in particular is reminiscent of reading the best Gramsci, who devoted similar care to illustrating the diverse constitutional settlements that characterised the modern capitalist state.
