Wow—disturbing revelations about the ‘exalted’ Southern politician who coined the phrase ‘Cotton is King.’ It wasn’t enough that he was one of the south's most ardent supporters of slavery, and a brutal slave owner himself, but he was a pedophile who kept detailed, unapologetic accounts of the assaults in his diary. Sickening.

I’d long (and wrongly) believed that Lincoln’s inauguration set off the Southern states’ secession. I hadn’t appreciated how much tension had already been building beforehand, or that South Carolina had actually left the Union under President Buchanan. There were numerous events preceding Lincoln's presidency that had already provoked significant fear, hostility, and distrust in the South.
