The second book-in-book was curious- an autobiography of a New York financier in 1938, also with a wife that had an interest in the arts who succumbed to illness in Switzerland. It has a lot of "filter text here; put in fun anecdote later" type sentences and alsoooo unsurprisingly very capitalist in his attitudes.

The 3rd book starts as another memoir, of a writer in her 70s who seemingly worked at Bevel House 1938

So is the throughline rich guys with dead wives??

Got Gilded Age vibes from the description of Benjamin, but less certain on how to place Helen in my head. I'm curious if the other books within the book are about them and how they frame differently.
