Marian Halcombe, is a witty, confident and observant young woman although, there is one thing that just peeves me. It is Marian’s grating internalized misogyny, the sexism being so bombastic that it caught me off guard as a contemporary reader; not for its deep offence, but for the almost deeply unserious ways she puts down her own sex to humour of the man she just met. In colloquial terms, she’s a pick me.
