Pretty sure he understands Japanese as well since he interpreted something for Soft. My thought is as nowhere as exciting as yours. I just think he got a private education coming from a rich family. But I will say that his "bo" is actually not used as much for chinese names, but for transliterated foreign names, which strike me as a bit odd when the Korea fluency came up because "Bo" is "Baek" in Korean. But also that might mean nothing because Bo can also be pronounced as Bai and Chinese readers joking call him 600Yuan (Liu Bai Yuan, as it has similar pronunciation for Lu "bai"yuan, as if his name was Bai instead of Bo) Sorry for rambling in your comments but I also finished this book so recently and I was thinking about the Bo-Bai-Baek this the whole time lol
