This is emblematic of Kwan's writing. Why he's so allergic to writing regular dialogue kills me. The Ah-ma dialogue he wrote about "knowing someone by looking at their face", he was really scratching the surface of something great but then it was back to normal.

Finally have my GOAT audiobook flow and yet this book is still a supreme letdown. The Michael and Astrid scene was all I was waiting for and may have been the worst written scene in the book.

“He smiled mysteriously” like?? Your wife found out about your affair? Your family is likely broken up? Couldn’t believe that line

An Asian man (from the perspective of an Asian woman) writing the ‘Rachel and Nicholas’ chapter is certainly a choice. Having that be the origin of our love interests in a romance novel is also certainly a choice
