Don't recall Rhett being so social Darwinist; love the line: (621) its a poor person or nation sits around crying because life didn't turn out as they'd imagined. Melanie's defense of Rhett, clearing weeds from Yankee graves, etc.

My recollection of Part II of the film vague. Rhett really joined the Confederate army? Seeing that adolescent Confederate soldier collapse; the other guy break ranks to carry him: jarred him out of his cynicism? Initially I thought he just said something to justify leaving Scarlett in the lurch. But IDK, re-reading it, I still can't quite read what's going on in Rhett's mind during that section.

Tears welled up when Rhett bid $150 gold to dance with Scarlett and she accepted . . . Ashley's letter about the war and what he was fighting for, also gave me chills. Going to re-read his letter before moving on to Part III tomorrow.

I don't think I put it down for longer than 90 minutes all day.
