this is how you properly hook a reader from the first page. I feel the ancient rome and greece vibes mixed with greek philosophy but also a touch of scifi elements that remind me a bit of sanderson

idk this book... it's not bad but it's also predictable to me and I can't help but see the similarities to the author's inspirations

aequa - her name says it. we have this word in italian - equa - it means equilibrate, just. anything that doesn't seem normal to her, she has to tell to a praeceptor because she's well, aequa, fair. that's why her classmates find her annoying. she proves not everything that seems 'unjust' is. sometimes people like vis are just better than others at what they do.

I'm liking this but there's something about it that doesn't make me like it enough

excited to see what you think about this !! james islington is excellent at developing worlds and characters, and while i prefer licanius to the heirarchy (so far, anyway. havent gotten my hands on book two yet), i do think his writing skill has massively improved across just four books. and this one is genuinely a lot of fun. i believe sanderson and rothfuss were big inspirations for him, too, which explains the echoes of sanderson there
