I'm struck first by how incredibly selfish this decision was. It sounds nice, organic back to nature type stuff. Disappear into the wilderness that you love and return to the elements. Beautiful

Also selfish because in the end he was just 10 feet from the trail. So if they didn't do this "rescue" mission, hikers would have found him in the spring when the snow melted. Just kind of a dick move

I love the letters written on recovered scraps - old letters, food labels, box liners.
It reminds me of old civil war letters I've seen in a museum, letters written over old letters in different directions, pages of books and bibles salvaged as they didn't have anything else
