Second read.... I need Hugo's brilliant humanistic words and his loving philosophy more than ever. This grandiose work is still so relevant in our times... Reading Les Misérables is like pushing a secret door that leads me into a gorgeous but neglected courtyard garden I'd forgotten I had a key to. Seeing the beautiful wild flowers in the moonlight again, I remember everything I love and once loved...

Jean Valjean's long walk through the sewers of Paris with Marius on his back had me on the edge of my seat. And now Marius is reunited with his grandfather....I shed proper tears there!
But Jalvert...No! Why couldn't he live with the collapse of the absolute? Why??? It had to be so...

Gavroche is no more. One of the most memorable characters ever. Thank God for my son that I hadn't read this book when I was carrying him or the kid would have been named Gravroche!!!

Please tell me Jean Valjean doesn't kill Marius. He must keep being noble and give Fantine's daughter Cosette the man she loves. Starting the last book today....

That little street urchin Gavroche is such an incredible character. Hugo's genius resides in his choice of characters. Who he put center stage. Who he gave a voice to. The noble criminal. The selfless prostitute. The proud destitute son. The savant pauper. The courageous student and cowardly soldier. The child of the street philosopher... What a tale.

That was one of the most beautiful passages I've read in my life and I have read a lot of books! Marius's love letters to Cosette, their meeting in the garden and gentle declaration of love... "There are moments when, no matter the posture of the body, the soul is on its knees..."
